Utrecht paints

I primarily paint with Utrecht Acrylics and prefer working with a limited palette. Mixing my own colors from the primary colors—blue, yellow, and red—is an important part of my creative process. There are a few colors, such as turquoise, that I find difficult to mix consistently, so I purchase those premixed. White and black are also staples in my studio and are always part of my palette.

One of my favorite tools is a spray bottle. I always have one handy. I use it without really thinking as it has become so part of my process.

I prefer Utrecht Professional Gesso because of its excellent opacity and smooth coverage. It provides a bright, consistent surface that prepares my canvases or birch boards beautifully and often requires fewer coats than other brands I’ve tried. The thick, high-quality formula creates a durable painting surface while still allowing me to achieve the texture and finish I want. It’s been a reliable staple in my studio for many years.

I typically purchase gesso by the gallon because I use a lot of it in my studio. However, if you’re just getting started or don’t go through as much, this 16-ounce container is an excellent option. This version is the “Thick” formula rather than the “Ultra Thick,” but it still offers very good opacity and coverage. I’ve used it myself and found it to be a high-quality gesso that creates a solid, reliable surface for painting.
