Two Ravens Sit and Reflect painting series

Two Ravens Sit and Reflect painting series

As February begins, I’m thinking about Valentine’s Day and this got me to thinking about couples…which got me to thinking about twos…which got me to thinking about my “Two Ravens Sit and Reflect” painting series.

I’ve been painting pairs of ravens for a long time. I like painting ravens in twos because “pairs” of animals can symbolize love, partnership, tenacity, fertility, renewal, and abundance. Pairs of an animal are very auspicious.

Below is my “Two Ravens Watched the Sunset” acrylic painting.

Here’s a cropped version of “Two Ravens Protecting the Moon.”

I like these two looking at each other with the prayer flags and heart behind them. I painted them on a piece of recycled sky blue wood.

I love plays on words and the title, “Two Ravens Sit and Reflect” does that. If ravens could talk, there is the literal sense of two ravens sitting together and talking and reflecting about life. I love the idea of birds talking.

And then there is the mirror image of the two ravens reflecting back on each other.

It’s been a popular series and one I enjoy painting!

I think I would like to paint some pairs of other animals too. Feng Shui has a list of auspicious animals which includes Tortoise, tiger, phoenix, lions, elephants, fu dogs, deer, frogs, rats, rabbits, cows and horses to name a few. You can find the symbolism of these animals here.

Which animal would you like to see reflecting on each other in a painting?

This raven painting cracks me up. When the title came to me, I just laughed. It seemed fitting. I love that my raven has a personality named Mr. Raven. He’s a bit mysterious, a bit devious, definitely the trickster!

What I Find Inspiring – Brave Girls Club

This happened back in December but I’m just mentioning it now. I was the Featured bird artist on the Brave Girls Club daily truths email called “a little bird told me”.

What is the Brave Girls Club you may be wondering? It’s a community of women founded by Melody Ross and her sister Kathy Wilkins in 2009.

Their website says the “Brave Girls Club is a worldwide community of women who want to live the best, happiest, most productive and fabulously brave life they can possibly live…and that means something different to every single one of us.

Brave Girls Club is an online community, a portal for amazing connections, a news source for everyday heroes, a resource for great ideas, amazing endeavors, everyday problem solving, realistic recipes and unforgettable get-togethers. Brave Girls Club is a place to feel free, to feel peace, and to feel brave. Brave Girls Club is not an exclusive club…every woman is invited. Brave Girls Club is life-changing fun, life-changing truths, and life-changing friendships.”

I love receiving the Daily Truth emails in my inbox! They really touch the heart of the matter and what I’m feeling so many times!! My bird art was featured on the Dec. 2nd, 2010 email. It read like this:

Dear Beautiful Girl,

Keep your thoughts in the places that you want to be, dear friend. It takes a tremendous amount of discipline, but it is so worth it to train your mind to shy away from fear, hopelessness, dread, negativity, anger and jealousy. It truly is possible to practice day by day turning your thoughts towards gratitude, happiness and goodness, true happiness for the accomplishments and blessings of others, hope for the future, and forgiveness….even in the most difficult of times.

Each day, just make a solid decision that you will do whatever it takes to feel peace for the rest of the day. When a difficult feeling or situation arises, remind yourself of the commitment that you made that morning. Focus your mind on the beauty of the world, on the love that others have for you, on the love that you have for others, and on the blessings that you find in the moment (even if those blessings are as small as the fact that you have a roof over your head) and focus on hope for better days.

We must choose for yourself how you will feel, how you will react, how you will move forward in each moment. No one can do this for us. It is SO worth the work it takes to train ourselves to continuously focus on what is RIGHT rather than what is wrong.

You are phenomenal, strong and capable.
You can do this.

And it looked like this in my inbox.

They teach “Be Brave Enough to Live Your Truths.” I like that.

Courage to all!
