I’m going to try to post a video every week and see how that goes. If you have an idea for a video, please put it in the comments and I will try to address it.
Below are three new art videos that show some acrylic painting techniques.
The below video shows how I add black outline to my paintings and when I put a wash over the paint sometimes it makes the black line very dull looking. It’s important to go back over the black line with black paint to make the color pop!
My paintings have lots of layers of mark making. The below video shows more ways to add paint layers to a painting by using up some of my old paint.
After I have a lot of large areas of paint, I like to add some small marks. The below video shows some small mark making using some unusual tools.

I have some art videos on youtube and they’ve been inspiring others! I think this is wonderful and I love it when people share their art with me.
One Etsy artist, Christina Colwell, at helixartandglass wrote me this nice note.
I just wanted to share with you and thank you for making available some painting demonstrations on You Tube. I’ve been playing with some of your techniques which I just love. Anyway…here is the end result of most recent. Photo doesn’t really do justice to the layers and texture but it is what it is.
Below is her colorful image. It features a quote by Chesterson; “Angels Can Fly Because They Take Themselves Lightly.”
Christina has used the texture technique that I teach and the swirls using string. She also used the less dominant hand technique to create the angels. Love the whimsical, fun imagery!
It’s not that making videos is that hard on my MacBook. I use iMovie and it’s pretty intuitive. But it’s hard to find the time! And I can’t seem to figure out how to get rid of that annoying sound, the hummm, that is in the background of my voice talking. Oh well, it is an exercise in letting go and saying, “things do not have to be perfect.” I just wanted to get it done and share with you a bit about making it.
I’ve had the video pieces on my Mac since June but finally put them together last night. This is a video about the painting I made for the Fur Ball Auction in Todos Santos that benefits the dogs and cats there. You can read info about that in an earlier post. I believe the auction will be in January in 2012.
It took me awhile to finally make a video of my Baja art studio but here it is. We were there in May and June of this year. I’ve had people ask me what it looks like so I thought this would help you visualize it.
It’s pretty nice to have walls and big windows with shutters to let the light in. They also keep out the dust and wind when it picks up. Take a look.
I love texture in a painting. I thought you might like to see my work up close and see some of the texture I put into it. I’m often asked how I get the pattern in my paintings that you see in the background.
My process involves using wax paper that I paint and then scrap into with my fingernails, and then press onto the painting. I let it dry for a bit and then run it under the faucet to take some of the paint off with water.
It involves many layers of paint.
I use embroidery thread dipped in paint to get the swirls patterns like you see above. And I like putting the white dots in my work too. They show paths of swirling energy.
