Original Painted Steer Skull

steer skull art by lindy gaskill

I love the look of a southwest style painted steer skull. And I thought it would be fun to paint one myself.

When we were in Baja last Spring I got the chance.

A man stopped by our place one day with a pick up truck full of plain, white steer skulls. All of them were beautiful. It’s often hard to find ones that are so complete and not deteriorated. I chose one to paint and purchased it.

We cleaned it up and set it out to dry. But guess who got into it? Our little snoopy dog Belle. Here she is smiling at what she did.

She chewed the end off it. You can see the ragged edge of the nose.

Plain Steer Skull

I ended up rebuilding that part with papier-mâché. In the end, one can’t tell at all so I was pleased.

Now, what to paint on it? There are so many ideas for painted steer skulls on Pinterest.

I didn’t want to be too influenced by others although it’s hard not to be.

I eventually came up with an idea and sketched it onto the steer skull with pencil.

I first put down a layer of white gesso in the area I wanted to paint. This will make the paint last longer.

And then I painted it using my acrylics.

Steer skull art beginning painting

I didn’t worry about going outside the lines as I knew the background color would paint over it.

I think it came out nice.

It went through changes along the way though.

Notice the design has changed by adding orange flowers instead of the fanned graphic below.

I made it with a yellow background at first but I didn’t like how it fought with the turquoise top portion.

I liked the turquoise so I decided to paint more of what I liked which is always a good idea.

I like it much better now.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever do another painted steer skull but this one was fun for my very first one.

New Whimsical Tree Painting with Floating Moon Shadows

Whimsical Tree Painting

Floating moons. A tattooed tree. Brilliant shades of blue.

This is my latest whimsical tree painting titled “One Stood in the Shadow of the Floating Moons II.” I call my whimsical trees with the tattooed bark “Peace Trees.” Peace Trees represent peace and good will. Often times I will have prayer flags with them. This one has floating moons.

Whimsical Tree Painting

Whimsical Tree Painting

When I first created painting #1 with the same title, I was in Prescott, AZ. I had never heard of floating moon shadows. I just came up with the name after I painted it. This painting was one of three whimsical trees in a triptych. I was showing it at the gallery in Prescott, AZ called Van Gogh’s Ear. It sold quickly.

(Above: detail of painting titled One Stood in the Shadow of the Floating Moons, sold)

I liked it so much I made a card and a print out of it. You can find the print in my Etsy shop.

Moon Shadows

Last summer, during the solar eclipse, I definitely saw moon shadows! I immediately had to take photos! The moon shadows (or maybe they are reflections of light?) were floating on our garage.

Wow, it was amazing! They were all over our property. It was pretty cool.

solar eclipse moon shadows

Recently I was thinking about the floating moons and decided to paint another peace tree painting with them.

Favorite Titles

I have to admit I love the title. “One Stood in the Shadow of the Floating Moons” sounds like a lyrical poem when I say it which makes me happy. Just like my paintings.

Some of my other favorite titles are “Big Sun, Hidden Buddha,” “She Built Her Nest with Flowers and Bits of Sky” and “Red Dog Sleeps Under the Light of the Moon.

Did you see any floating moons during the solar eclipse? Any fav titles that you can share?

“Protected by Warrior Spirit” Whimsical Painting

Warrior spirit painting

Today I’m thinking about my latest symbolic painting. I don’t often share the symbolism behind a painting as I like the viewer to create their own story about it. However, I’m going to share a bit about my newest whimsical painting titled “Protected by Warrior Spirit.”

Symbolism of Protected by Warrior Spirit

It is not a warrior as in the traditional soldier, fighting type. Rather it is a warrior of grace. A warrior of the divine. Of Spirit.

It’s a concept more than an actual person. It’s a symbol. The colors black and red symbolize the life / death / life cycle which encompasses all of life. The feather of his spear represents a sharp yet forgiving nature.

For me, sharp means to use one’s mind for self development. To use one’s mind to figure out how things work. For truth finding. For using words wisely, to inspire others and for kindness.

A warrior spirit is mindful. He is aware of his surroundings. He protects those he cares about and helps them to be the best that they can be.

whimsical painting Warrior Spirit

A Spirit Warrior Website

I found this website called Spirit Warrior at khaledallen.com that talks a lot about what the Warrior Spirit means. They say, “A Warrior invests in herself, seeking to become her best self. A Warrior cherishes every moment, seeks to see every minute lived purposefully, even if that means at purposeful rest. A Warrior expects to stand out, to strive for excellence, and to pursue great goals.” I like that.

Warrior spirit whimsical painting

“Protected by Warrior Spirit”, 12″ x 12″, acrylic on wood panel, $375

Other Symbols in my Whimsical Painting

Some other symbols are a fish shape which represents food to nourish us. A moon shape representing the passing of time. Of life cycles. The shape behind the feather is a spiral of energy, representing a strong life force.

The space in his body is filled with petroglyphs. It shows that he is old and comes from ancient times. The white star and mandala-like line drawings in the blue background are magic lines of light that surround the Warrior Spirit.

A Warrior Spirit is nurturing. Hence, he is always there in my mind protecting me from harm.

To be protected by Warrior Spirit is a gift to myself and I like having him near to remind me to strive for excellence.

What do you think of the Warrior Spirit?

New Colorful Whimsical Acrylic Paintings

Whale, Raven, Sugar Skull Paintings

I’m in Mexico.

I can see I’m being affected by it’s beauty, color and magic.

I’ve always loved the sugar skulls in Mexico. I’ve done one other one a few years ago which you can purchase as a print. I felt the calling to create another.

Full Bloom Sugar Skull, 8″ x 10″, Acrylic on Wood Panel, (sold)

I’m fascinated by the raven and I’ve made quite a few paintings with him in it. This time I’ve added him to a painting with a dream catcher.

A good explanation of the dream catcher can be found at http://legomenon.com. They say, “The shape of the dreamcatcher is a circle because it represents the circle of life and how forces like the sun and moon travel each day and night across the sky. The dream catcher web catches the bad dreams during the night and dispose of them when the day comes.” I like that.

I own a dream catcher that I have in my home in Washington. It has beautiful feathers hanging from it and is made from twigs and leather string.

Catching Celestial Dreams, 8″ x 10″, Acrylic on Wood Panel, (sold)

In Todos Santos, we can see the whales spouting and jumping out in the ocean. I love watching for them. Greg said one time he heard the whales singing when he was swimming at Las Palmas beach. That is cool!

Bicycle and Raven painting

Bicycle and Raven painting

I just got my mt. bike tuned up and it’s been fun riding it! The gears weren’t shifting properly but now they are all good!

I love my bike and I love creating bicycle and raven paintings. I have quite a few of them now.

Here’s the latest one.

I titled it Yay! Joy Ride! because that is how I feel when I’m riding…I feel pretty joyful and happy! I think mt. biking was the first time I ever felt the word “glee”!

Spirit Bear Painting

Spirit Bear Painting

I love it when the unexpected appears in my paintings.

This spirit bear showed up as I was painting and I love that he did!

There is much symbolism in this piece and it feels very special.

New Colorful Acrylic Painting

colorful acrylic painting of flying owl

This colorful acrylic painting is titled “Fly Me Over the Moon So I May touch the Sun.” Or you can call it “Fly Me Over The Moon” for short. It is 14″ x 14″, acrylic on wood panel, $525.

I’m pretty sure this painting is about desiring more sunshine in my life. And following my inner “owl” wisdom. :)

It’s been quite a change living in Maple Falls, Washington where we get 67 inches of rain per year. The US average is 37. So, that’s a lot of rain and cloudy days!

We still want to spend most of our time in Mexico (hello sunshine!) and be in Washington during the summer but as we get our ducks in a row we’re spending more time in Washington this year. So I’ve been thinking about the sun and warm weather a lot when we have blustery rainy days which is quite often!

I like the way the lotus flower is sitting on top of the body of the tree like it has a blossom head. And the symbols in the top left of the painting looks like a wink from the Universe.

Colorful Tree Art – Watch the Sun, Follow the Stars

Colorful Tree Art – Watch the Sun, Follow the Stars

Sometimes I visualize a story behind my painting and write a few words to illustrate it as if my image were in a storybook.

This is what came to me for this painting titled “Watch the Sun, Follow the Stars.”

“If you look up during the day you can watch the sun. It moves over the forest and fields. At night, branches cover overhead like a blanket of thorny thicket. I make my way through the forest by following the stars as they peek through the branches. I look over yonder and see shooting stars fall like fireworks in the sky. I know life is a miracle and the forest holds magic.

There was one tree that was my favorite. It was an elder Tree. As ancient as the sky is wide.

It wore the tapestry of it’s knowledge, etched in patterns and colors to match the rainbow….”

Mermaid Painting “She Carried the Light”

Mermaid painting

I will admit it. I’m a weanie when it comes to swimming in big waves at the ocean so I don’t go in very deep when I see waves crashing. Since I’m not a mermaid, I decided at least I could paint one.

Gecko Painting titled “Mi Amigo”

Gecko painting

I was outside painting and getting a lot of layers down but it wasn’t turning into anything in particular. Then a little gecko came by and sat next to my painting as if to say “Paint me.” And so I did.

Sending Love and Healing Light Painting

Sending Love and Healing Light Painting

I painted this painting intuitively as I often do with my art.

Sometimes my paintings feel as if they develop all by themselves and I am just the channel for the creativity.

When I was through with it the title instantly came to me as that was what I was feeling from it. It uplifted me and I felt the positive energy radiating from it.

I decided to dedicate it to my hubby, Greg, as he was feeling under the weather and could use some healing energy. So I told him I was “Sending Love and Healing Light” to him with this painting and he said that made him feel good. Yay!

Since then, Greg is feeling a whole lot better so that is great. And every time I look at this image, I feel the love and healing light coming from it. Maybe it’s because I repeat the words in my head when I look at it but either way, it lifts me up! 🙂

“Transcend” Lotus Painting Celebrates My 2015 Word

Lotus Painting

I finally chose my word to represent 2015. It has been a tradition for many as the new year approaches to choose a word to focus on to set the intention for the year.

Actually, last year, I don’t think I chose a word. But “Focus” was my word for 2013.

This year I chose a word a little late in the game. It was January before I finally decided what it would be.

It wasn’t until I painted this lotus painting before I knew. I titled this lotus piece “Transcend.” And then I knew that was the perfect word for me.

Lotus Painting

“Transcend,” 8″ x 8″, acrylic on paper, © Lindy Gaskill

I love the shape and symbolism of the lotus. When I started this painting I didn’t know that it would turn into a lotus.

The lotus symbol is used a lot with yoga and spirituality which I study so it was no surprise that a lotus came to life in this painting.

A lotus emerges from the waters of a pond with beautifully shaped petals and gorgeous color, symbolizing youth, beauty and life. The word transcend came to me as I gazed at the painting and felt a lift to my spirit. A floating feeling came over me.

The reason I like the word “Transcend” is because it feels so much like what I am trying to accomplish with all the changes going on in my life.

Transcend
tran(t) send/
verb: transcend: to rise above or go beyond the normal limits of (something)

For me, it’s transcending the chaotic feelings of change. I could have chosen “change” as my word but that didn’t feel right. As I didn’t want to focus on change but rather transcending change. I liked the idea of rising up and going beyond change.

I want to let peace prevail instead of the chaotic feelings that often come with change.

We made some big decisions in 2014 to sell our house in Prescott, AZ and move half our stuff to Washington state and half to Mexico. People do.

Our house sold this past winter so it was a sure thing that “change” was happening and fast. The key is not to let it become overwhelming with all the tasks that come with moving. That is why the word “transcend” appealed to me.

I like looking at this painting and repeating the word “transcend” to myself. It calms me.

This is perfect for how I want to feel the majority of the time. Peaceful and calm and accepting the “now.”

Being here right now in this spot is where I am supposed to be. I like that.

What is your word for 2015?

New Year Party Painting

New Year Party painting

Hello Art Lovers,

I begin the new year with a splash of color!

It is fitting that my first painting for 2015 is titled “Fiesta de Año Nuevo” which is spanish for New Year Party.

It is a celebration of color, line and pattern! And since we are in Baja, Mexico right now, where you will find lots of that in the ceramics, art and culture here, what could be more perfect than that?

Jizos Under Prayer Flags

First, I’d like to thank Rita of Nurturing Art for suggesting I paint Jizo.
Thank you Rita for your inspiration and being a supporter of my art.

I love Jizo. He is so adorable with his child-like features. I love his sweet smile and the way he puts his face up to the sky, beaming his joy and gratitude.

I didn’t know who Jizo was when I heard the name and so I Googled it.

I read in Japan, “Jizo is one of the most dearly loved of all Japanese divinities and known as the protector of women, children, and travelers.”

My new Jizo mini paintings are below. They can be found for sale in my Etsy Shop.

New Hippie Flower Power Van painting

vw van painting with raven

This is a new painting titled “Flower Power. ” It’s 20″ x 20″, acrylic on wood.

I’m loving how the flowers came out in the background and I love the color combination of purple and orange. The stenciled word “Flower” can be seen going up the side of the painting. I like putting semi-hidden words in my paintings.

There is a print for sale of this painting in my Etsy Shop>

A Red Snowy VW Bug Painting

VW Bug painting

This is a new red, snowy VW bug painting. The bug image is taken from a photo of a 1959 beetle. 1959 was the year I was born. It’s 12″ x 12″, acrylic on wood panel, $375.

I dedicate it to all those who have traveled through the snow and are thankful how well a VW bug plows through! I know, I’ve been there. They are amazing in the snow.

I’ve never painted a snow scene quite like this before. The painting went through many layers and changes.

First, I had a little bit of snow in it. But it looked like I couldn’t decide if I wanted snow in it or not…and my husband, Greg, gave me some good advice. “If you’re going to put snow in your painting, REALLY put some snow into it!”  So I did. 🙂

Then it still took a while for the painting to evolve to the finished piece. I added the bits of color sprinkled through the snow which I think adds some magic.

VW Bus Painting titled “Peace, Baby”

When I was young my friends, Heidi and Mark, had a VW bus. And we went on a couple road trips in their VW that I will never forget. So much fun! We went to Grateful Dead concerts, went exploring through the desert, and found some awesome camp spots. Those are great memories.

So I am very fond of VW buses. And now one has appeared in one of my paintings.

New Flying Fish Painting

I have a new colorful, flying fish painting titled “A Fantastic Journey.” It’s a magical forest with a wise owl, one flying fish and wind swept leaves cavorting under a glowing moon.

I wanted to create something that is not of this world. Where do you find flying fish but in a magical forest.

Bicycle and Raven Art Painting Commission

I love making these bike and raven art pieces! This one was a commissioned painting. It was requested to use primary colors and put their little doggie in the painting. I think it is a fun piece and it was really fun to create!

All my bicycle and raven paintings have a hidden word in the painting that is from the title of the piece. Sometimes the word is very obvious and this one’s word is “Ride.” You can see the word at the bottom of the painting. I use a stencil process to create the word.
