As February begins, I’m thinking about Valentine’s Day and this got me to thinking about couples…which got me to thinking about twos…which got me to thinking about my “Two Ravens Sit and Reflect” painting series.
I’ve been painting pairs of ravens for a long time. I like painting ravens in twos because “pairs” of animals can symbolize love, partnership, tenacity, fertility, renewal, and abundance. Pairs of an animal are very auspicious.
Below is my “Two Ravens Watched the Sunset” acrylic painting.

Here’s a cropped version of “Two Ravens Protecting the Moon.”

I like these two looking at each other with the prayer flags and heart behind them. I painted them on a piece of recycled sky blue wood.
I love plays on words and the title, “Two Ravens Sit and Reflect” does that. If ravens could talk, there is the literal sense of two ravens sitting together and talking and reflecting about life. I love the idea of birds talking.
And then there is the mirror image of the two ravens reflecting back on each other.
It’s been a popular series and one I enjoy painting!

I think I would like to paint some pairs of other animals too. Feng Shui has a list of auspicious animals which includes Tortoise, tiger, phoenix, lions, elephants, fu dogs, deer, frogs, rats, rabbits, cows and horses to name a few. You can find the symbolism of these animals here.
Which animal would you like to see reflecting on each other in a painting?
